NE 130th St / 35th Ave NE (map)

The first is 35th Ave NE crossing from the neighborhoods to the east to NE 130th Street where pedestrians walk to bus stops and to the Fred Meyer store. With the unaligned connection of NE 130th west to east, cars are making lots of turns right where pedestrians are trying to cross to the stairway to the east. That coupled with buses sitting for layovers makes this intersection exceptionally challenging. Pedestrian inventories were taken by Seattle Dept. of Transportation and they designated it as a high safety risk crossing, but even though Greater Lake City Community Council has entered it twice to the Neighborhood Street Fund, it still has not been funded. SDOT pulled it from their work schedule this year.
Seattle Department of Transportation (SDoT) Response
Pedestrian safety is high priority for SDOT. Marked crosswalks can be an important tool to help people cross the street comfortably, but they are not the best solution at all locations.
Among other intersections, you mention the intersection of 35th Avenue NE and NE 130th Street. SDOT plans to build a curb bulb on the northwest corner and mark a crosswalk to the stairway on the east side of 35th Avenue NE. Design will begin this year, and construction will take place in 2009.
