Jail Siting Update

Siting a new jail in Seattle isn't a task I would voluntarily sign up for, but that's exactly what I will be doing with my colleagues over the next nine months or so.  Here's a quick summary:

When Seattle police officers make arrests they take these arrestees to the King County Jail where we "rent" jail cells.  But King County is running out of room, so beginning January 1, 2013 the County jail will no longer accept bookings for misdemeanor-only crimes.  So, Seattle must find an alternative jail facility for misdemeanants and fast.  Read the Seattle Times and Seattle PI stories on all this.  The city has posted information about the jail siting process, background, site selection factors, site lists, and other information you can read at a special website.

Police Contract Settlement Good News for Seattle

Here’s a quick update on the proposed settlement reached between the city and the Seattle Police Officers’ Guild announced yesterday afternoon.

This settlement is good for our city because it raises the overall compensation package for our officers to a competitive level with surrounding jurisdictions.  Our officers will now be the best paid in the state of Washington and they deserve that.  It will help bolster new officer recruiting and stop the loss of experienced officers whoare leaving to take positions with nearby departments.  We lost seven trained and experienced officers in the first quarter of this year to other police agencies and this contract will go a long way in stopping that.
