Magnuson Park Update

There are two public design workshops currently scheduled. The first will be Tuesday on April 27th, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Sand Point (7400 Sand Point Way NE). There will not be any formal presentations so you can drop by anytime during those hours. The design team will have three options for a Magnuson Park Design for discussion. They all include approximately 43 acres for athletic fields, an off leash area and significant wetland restoration.

Soul Of A Citizen

A new book by West Seattle resident Paul Loeb (Soul of a Citizen - Living with conviction in a cynical time) has just been published. The book is about citizen participation, which is also the purpose of this email newsletter - Urban Politics. It offers an antidote to the twin scourges of modern life - powerlessness and cynicism.

At the book's core are stories of ordinary citizens who've found unexpected fulfillment in social involvement. Through their example and we feel compelled to move from passivity to participation. The reward for this, is a sense of connection and purpose rarely found in a purely personal life. For more information on it see website, www.soulofacitizen.org

Arboretum At Cap Meeting

On Wednesday, April 28, the Culture Arts and Parks (CAP) Committee I chair will have a discussion on the Arboretum. This discussion should begin at approximately 3 p.m., and will last for an hour. The CAP Committee meeting begins at 2 p.m.; other business will occupy the first hour.

Here's a description of what the CAP Arboretum discussion will look like:

1. Brief overview by Council Central Staff on development of plan, past Council actions, future Council decision points (5 minutes)

2. Presentation of Arboretum Master Plan by proponents (10 minutes)

3. Presentation by Arboretum Park Preservation Coalition (10 minutes)

4. Discussion of issues (35 minutes), with emphasis on alternatives that should be included in EIS (items below, although others are possible):
- buildings
- plant collection
- access, who is being served
- parking/trails, circulation
- finance

The participants will be from the Seattle Department of Parks & Recreation, the University of Washington, the Arboretum Foundation, and the Arboretum Park Preservation Coalition.

The first airing will likely be Thursday evening, April 29.

Hearing Examiner Decisions

In a cooperative project with the City of Seattle Hearing Examiner, the City Clerk's Office is making available the full text of Hearing Examiner decisions in a searchable database. Currently, the database covers just decisions from January 1999 forward and a few older cases, but plans are to include all Hearing Examiner decisions from the office's inception in 1974 to present.
