• Office of Police Accountability [OPA]

The mission of the Office of Professional Accountability is to provide for citizen oversight of the citizen complaint process; to promote public awareness of and full access to that process; and to advance reforms that increase police accountability to the public by the Seattle Police Department.
 

• OPA Auditor

The OPA Auditor is an appointed official and not an employee of the city. The auditor has access to all complaints and investigations thereof, but has no official authority to require OPA to take any specific action. A significant amount of auditor time is spent interfacing with the OPA Director regarding the classification and investigation of complaints. By ordinance the auditor is required to report on his/ her activities.

• National Association for Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement

The National Association for Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement (NACOLE) began its operations on May 16, 1995. As NACOLE continues to grow, the relationship between police and community - particularly the minority community -continues to be one of the most critical social issues facing this country. The number of civilian oversight agencies in the U.S. has significantly increased. Of the nation’s 100 largest cities, 71 have citizen review mechanisms. Since 1996, NACOLE has assisted more than 20 cities in their establishment of systems.
