2008 Annual Report:
Your Energy Future, Conservation is the New Power Plant

Image: 2008 Annual Report - Your Energy Future, Conservation is the New Power Plant
Seattle City Light realized a visionary conservation effort in 2008 that will forever change the way we do business. Because the time is gone when we can build another dam to meet increasing demands for power, City Light turns to its workhorse - conservation. Saving energy is our new power plant. This 2008 Annual Report seeks to tell the story of how we're fulfilling conservation's promise while meeting our highest goal - to deliver the best customer service experience of any utility in the nation. Seattle City Light is now operating two diesel hybrid trouble trucks in its large vehicle fleet as part of the utilitys commitment to the Citys Climate Action Now efforts and the utilitys goal to cut fuel use, shrink its carbon footprint, and improve customer service by reducing the noise of repair work. The vehicles provide a 60 to 70 percent reduction in fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions while operating with less noise. Read more here.

City Light Helps Seattle Aquarium Install Solar Project
City Light Helps Seattle Aquarium Install Solar ProjectThe Seattle Aquarium unveiled Seattles first solar hot water demonstration project June 16, a system that will reduce the Aquariums use of natural gas by preheating water used in the second floor cafe. Installed with financial support from Seattle City Light and Puget Sound Energy, the five solar panels will shrink the Aquariums carbon footprint by 2.5 tons of CO2 each year, and teach the Aquariums 800,000 visitors about renewable energy sources. Streetlight Repairs
At the present time, our repairs are averaging about 60 days. However recently the Mayor authorized City Light to spend an additional $2.1 million to work through the back log of reported streetlights. In addition, there are monies available to complete Phase II of our group re-lamping program. Phase II will focus on the area that includes: Lake Washington the east; Elliot Bay on the west; Denny Way to the north and Brandon Street to the south. We will replace all of the streetlights within this area. Phase III and Phase IV will be completed in 2010 and 2011 respectively if funds are available. This will allow us to get on a planned four-year cycle for streetlight replacement. In addition, the City is applying for federal stimulus money to begin replacement of 40,000 streetlights with energy-efficient LED lights. Our target is to have all reported streetlights repaired sometime this Fall and to get back on a regular 10-day response cycle. If your light has not been repaired in 90 days, please email SCL_StreetLightEscalations@Seattle.Gov and provide the ticket number of your original request. We appreciate your patience as we work to get caught up as soon as possible.

New Integrated Resource Plan

Seattle City Light purchases about 60 percent of the power from the Stateline wind farm
City Light's Integrated Resource Plan is the roadmap to ensure sufficient power resources to meet future customer needs. Over the next several months, City Light planners will be reviewing and updating this plan. City Light planners will seek advice from customers and outside utility experts. Our goal is to submit an updated plan to the state in the fall of 2010. The plan will also address how City Light will comply with the conservation and renewable generation requirements of Initiative 937 (I-937), passed by Washington voters in November 2006.
