Funding of the the Magnuson Community Garden

Contents

About the Funding

Garden construction has been funded through a combination of matching fund awards, the Pro Parks Levy, and donations of funds, materials, and services. A group of volunteers formed a nonprofit organization called the Magnuson Community Garden to guide development of the garden and to facilitate a donor program.

The work is not completed. The garden will be seeking additional assistance from volunteers and funding sources to add the remaining components which include art, a central gathering place in the middle of the garden, a formal entrance, additional plantings, tool sheds, and various educational components. See Five Year Plan Draft.

Department ofNeighborhoods Awards

The Magnuson Community Garden organization applied for and has received four awards from the Department of Neighborhoods Matching Fund Program. Two $10,000 Small and Simple Awards for completing the design and construction drawings; a Large Projects Award of $150,000. These awards required a detailed plan, matches of funds and labor. A Neighborhood Outreach Award of $750 was received for constructing an information sign in the park about the project.  The Childrens' Garden also applied for and received awards from private organizations.  Information about building activities and the final reports to the city can be viewed on the following pages:

Pro ParksLevy

The Pro Parks Levy program provided $118,000 for the development of the Magnuson Community Garden. Information about Seattle's Pro Parks Levy may be viewed on the City of Seattle Parks and Recreation site, Pro Parks Levy. Information about the Community Garden is under the Pro Parks Sand Point/Magnuson P-Patch

Private Fund Contributors

In addition to pledges made by individuals toward the Department of Neighborhoods matching awards, there have been number of other contributors which are noted on the Recognition of Donors page.    The arbor and the fountain in the Tranquil Garden were made possible through private donations.

Volunteer Labor, Professional Services, and Other Items

Much of the garden was built through volunteer labor of many individuals and organizations. Many of those individuals and groups are listed on the Recognition of Donors page.
