Report on Clean Seattle Initiative

Cleanup: Beacon Hill Community

Date of Cleanup:  February 17, 2007

On Saturday, February 17, 2007, Mayor Greg Nickels led more than ninety (90) volunteers as they cleaned and greened the Beacon Hill Community. Participants from Van Asselt students and staff South Beacon Hill Neighborhood Council, Filipino American Veterans Association, New Holly Neighborhood Association, African American Academy, Chinese Baptist Church Boy Scouts (Beacon Hill Troops), Cleveland High School, Franklin High School, Bethany United Church of Christ, and King County Juveniles’ program collected litter and removed dead leaves.

Community Representatives and Mayor Nickels planted a tree along Beacon Avenue . The Department of Neighborhoods, Office of Emergency Management, Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle Parks and Recreation, the Department of Corrections, Seattle City Light and Seattle Public Utilities also assisted in the effort. The clean up area is bounded by Beacon Ave Median from S. Graham St to the North to S. Holden St. on the South with additional project areas to East 35th Ave. S. and (Sealth Trail) and West to Military Road S. below Myrtle.

Cleanup Activities:

  • Collected (67) bags of litter (or approx. 1005 lbs)
  • 27 damaged, weathered or missing traffic signs replaced
  • 3 tons of Asphalt applied
  • 15 potholes repaired
  • 40 cubic yards of debris swept
  • 60 feet of faded curb repainted
  • Maintainance performed on 20 streetlights
  • Cut blackberries & brush totaling approximately (120) bags of yard waste (approx. 1800 lbs)
  • In combination with volunteers Roy Young and Carolyn Dahle spread about 7 tons of gravel and 6 yards of bark in the median S. of Myrtle.

Emergency preparedness information was available for the first time at the January 20th Clean and Green Seattle event.
