Volunteer Activity

  • From Marianne Scholl:

"Many, many thanks to the volunteers who showed up on Saturday morning to help plant trees, pick up garbage and show the City that we are committed to improving 15th Ave NW. All in all, volunteers planted 27 good-sized trees and picked up bags and bags of trash.

Special thanks are also in order for Rob Mattson at the Department of Neighborhood for working hard to coordinate and plan the whole event, and to Ron Lindsay for taking on the project when asked and for putting in lots of time to coodinate the community's involvement and organizing refreshments. Thanks also to QFC, Ballard Market, Starbucks and Safeway for supporting our efforts with donuts, coffee and juice.

Deputy Mayor Tim Ceis came and helped plant trees. Mary Maduzia and Ron Harris-White then took him took him on a tour to see the sad state of our street. I believe he was surprised by what he saw, and I hope that his visit will help focus City attention on repairing curbs, removing unneeded poles etc. We also presented him with our Envisioning 15th Ave NW report and described our vision of a more pedestrian friendly, vibrant business district. We ended up at Baker Park, where Andrea Faste and other dedicated WHCC members and Parks department employees were working hard. The park looks wonderful!

Saturday, the Association also officially adopted 15th Ave between 70th and 85th. Pretty soon signs will be up acknowledging this. It will mean four work parties to pick up trash. We hope that businesses and residents will join in to keep corridor clean. Thank you Andy MacDonald for organizing this. "
