Report on Clean Seattle Initiative

Cleanup: Broadway

Date of Cleanup:  August 28, 2004

Departments:  Seattle Parks and Recreation, Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle City Light, Seattle Public Utilities Community Services Division

The Mayor, Mrs. Nickels, and City Librarian Deborah Jacobs lead more than 20 neighborhood business people and volunteers, along with the services of city departments to clean up the Broadway Business District and surrounding areas on Saturday, August 28th.

The partners got involved with litter pick-ups, street cleaning, and tree planting. Mayor Nickels planted a tree along Broadway. Clean & Green Seattle also partnered with the new Broadway BIA (Business Improvement Association) to give the Mayor an in depth tour of the accomplishments and ongoing clean-up work facing the Broadway Business District.

Mayor Nickels acknowledged the hard work of the local area merchants in working to make the Broadway Business District a strong and dynamic community. The Mayor also acknowledged the ongoing cooperative participation between the City and the Library in answering the call of the neighborhoods to address issues around reading, self-education and information.

Other community partners included Capitol Hill Stewardship Council, Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce, Capitol Hill Community Council, and The Greater Seattle Business Association. City departments included Seattle Department of Transportation; Seattle Parks and Recreation; Office of Economic Development; Seattle City Light; Seattle Department of Neighborhoods; Seattle Police Department; and Seattle Public Utilities. The Seattle Channel covered the event.

Cleanup Activities:

  • Swept - 5 curb miles
  • Potholes- patched 5 using 21 tons of mix
  • Leaves - picked up 8 cubic yards of leaves
  • Overgrowth - cut 1 swath mile
  • Curb paint - 6
  • Sign repair/ - 6 locations
  • 110 Lights Repaired
  • Types of invasives removed - Ivy
  • Yards of woodchips spread - 3
  • Number of garbage bags picked up
  • Multiple shrubs Area weeded
  • 2000 sq. ft. Shrubbery removal (pounds) 1/4 ton
  • Number of graffiti removals/ paintouts 2
