Mayor Nickels led more than 75 Neighborhood volunteers cleaned up the Central Area, Saturday, April 17 th. Volunteers included City Year, Cherry Street Association, Central Neighborhood Association, and 23 rd & Union Business Group, Feet First, King County 's Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention. In addition to the litter pick-up and tree pit cleaning along 23 rd Avenue , Mayor distributed drought resistant plants to residents and businesses. Seattle Department of Transportation Director Grace Crunican and Seattle Parks and Recreation Operations Direction Christopher Williams also participated in this clean-up effort.
"Clean and Green Seattle event had a simple recipe for success EVERYBODY WAS ENGAGED. The city teams, working together, made the event sustainable. The teens, midschoolers, volunteers, various ages, mixed genders, cultures and races brought exciting energy. All participants shared a positive vision and demonstrated a passion for community capacity building."

Cleanup Activities:

Urban Forestry crews worked with volunteers to clean out and mulch 46 tree pits

Traffic Signs and Markings cleaned 10 signs and replaced 4 damaged or missing signs

Street Maintenance crews swept 50 curb miles, patched potholes using 3 tons of asphalt mix and installed 30 sidewalk shims

65 lights were repaired

15 items planted

5 Yards of bark/wood chips spread

37 garbage bag pick-ups

240 plants pruned

1,000 sq. ft Area weeded

One truch of shrubbery removed

Two Department of Corrections work crews spread woodchips and bark over planting strips along Union street in partnership with the community.

SPU provided a new streetside litter can for the community per their request.

Metro transit provided on new litter can at the bus shelter on Union and 20th.
