More than 60 Neighborhood volunteers, along with the services of Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle Parks and Recreation, Seattle City Light, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and SPU Community Services Division cleaned up the area near and around Rainier Beach Saturday, October 11th.
The "Clean Seattle" team partnered with the Rainier Beach Merchants Association, Rainier Beach Community Club, Rainier Beach High School, Rainier Beach Community Center & Advisory Council, South Lake High School, SE Seattle Crime Council, SE Weed & Seed, New Covenant Christian Center, and residents in the surrounding neighborhood. The volunteer crews worked through noon at locations throughout the Rainier District in litter pick-ups, street cleaning, streetlight repairs, graffiti paint-outs, and weeding.
Another group of community volunteers cut blackberry bushes along Rainier Ave.
Mayor Nickels acknowledged community efforts in Rainier and "Clean Seattle's" work throughout the city. The Mayor and volunteers pulled weeds along the Mapes Creek Walk.
Cleanup Activities:
- Replaced eight damaged, weathered or missing traffic signs.
- Repainted curbs at two locations.
- Applied three tons of asphalt.
- Swept 18 miles of curb.
- Picked up garbage bags at one location.
- Pathways cleaned at three locations.
- Shoulders graded on five blocks.
- Repaired or relamped 71 streetlights.
- Cleared 125 square feet of weeds.
- Pounded wooden tree stakes to secure 30 young trees.
- Generated 15-20 garbage bags of clean green.
- Completed about 20 graffiti tag removals.
- Completed five private property graffiti paintouts.
- Generated 35 graffiti first letters and seven 10-day graffiti letters issued.
- Replaced 98 missing or broken panes of glass in bus shelters.
