Report on Clean Seattle Initiative

Cleanup: Haller Lake

Date of Cleanup: January 21 , 2006

Departments:  Seattle Department of Transportation, Parks and Recreation, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Department of Correction work crews and Seattle Public Utilities Community Services Division.

Saturday, January 21, 2006, marked the 50th “Clean & Green” event since Mayor Greg Nickels launched the neighborhood clean-up initiative four years ago. The Mayor, volunteers from the Friends of Northacres Park, the Haller Lake community club, Northacres Dog Off-Leash Area, North Seattle Alliance Church and city work crews came together to clear blackberry bushes, pick up trash, and clean up the area around Northacres Park and Haller Lake. More than 40 volunteers participated.

“Over the past four years, I’ve had the honor to roll my sleeves up with more than 5,500 people who gave up a part of their Saturday to make a difference in their neighborhoods,” Mayor Nickels said. “That spirit of commitment and community is what makes Seattle such a beautiful place to live.”

Mayor Nickels was presented a comprehensive map listing all 50 clean up events.

Department of Neighborhoods Director Yvonne Sanchez also attended. The mayor also honored the Department of Corrections and King County Juvenile work teams for their ongoing participation in the Clean & Green effort.

  • Repaired 72 streetlights
  • Used 2 tons of asphalt to patch over 35 potholes
  • Planted two native trees and 3 native shrubs.
