On Saturday, March 18, 2006, Mayor Greg Nickels led more
than 65 volunteers in the greening and cleaning of South Park. The kick
off event was held at Cesar Chavez Park. Cesar Chavez has received more
than $150 thousand in Matching Funds for its renovation.
South Park Neighborhood Association, Mark Johnson-CC Park and Rivercity
Skate Park Lead, Lora Suggs-ECOSS, SP Community Center,-Teen Program,
SP Boxing Gym, Concord Elementary, SP Art Council, Sea Mar, Fire Station
26, SP Area Redevelopment, Consejo, and Marra farm participated.
Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle Parks and Recreation,
Seattle City Light, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle Works,
King County Juvenile work team, Department of Correction work crews and
Seattle Public Utilities Community Services Division were also a part
of the effort.
Volunteer activities included transferring plants from the park to Fire
Station 26, litter pickup and sidewalk sweeping.
Cleanup Activities:
- 26 traffic signs
replaced
- 6 tons of Asphalt applied
- Multiple potholes filled at 8 locations
- 46 curb miles swept
- 25 street lights were repaired
- Planted 34 new plants
- Removed 65 bags of debris
- Cutback 50+ yards of sticker bushes
- Removed & recycled 1160 pounds of tires (45 tires)
- Removed/disposed of additional 1300 pounds of debris
- Picked up 18 bags of litter (120 lbs)
