In the summer of 2005, Mayor Greg Nickels expanded the City of Seattle's efforts to create trust and partnership with the South Park community. Successes from those efforts, especially the funding of gang prevention and intervention services, the Department of Social and Health Services' agreement to provide services to South Park residents from its White Center office instead of southeast Seattle, as well as the opening of the South Park Library on Cloverdale Street, laid the groundwork for another phase of work in this community: The South Park Action Agenda.

Beginning in April 2006, a group of community and business leaders, community- based organizations, residents and youth worked with city staff to develop the South Park Action Agenda (SPAA). The South Park community agreed to break into five committees to develop specific strategies and recommendations in these areas:

  • Youth Development
  • Environment and Physical Improvements
  • Community Engagement
  • Business and Transportation
  • Public Safety

South Park Action Agenda Updates

In response to the South Park Action Agenda, Mayor Nickels allocated $1.75 million for a variety of South Park services that were defined by the community in the South Park Action Agenda. Read the press release to know more about the services:

In addition, the City of Seattle developed responses to all 130 recommendations in the South Park Action Agenda. The responses were announced during a large community Town Hall held on March 8, 2007. The detailed responses will be available online soon. In the interim, summary responses are available in English, Spanish and Vietnamese:

During the Town Hall, several community members the City to prepare a summary report of how city funding for youth development and gang prevention, intervention, and recovery services in South Park was being used. The summary report was completed and circulated to the community in May 2007. It is available here in English and Spanish:

Finally, in early 2007 the City of Seattle and several community members worked together to discuss challenges and strategize solutions to effectively build community engagement during implementation of the South Park Action Agenda. The ideas and strategies that came out of that process were collected and developed into a community guide by a consultant to the City. The "South Park Action Agenda Implementation Guide" is available here in English; summary versions in both Spanish and Vietnamese are coming soon.
