Mayor Nickels Message to Employees
Today I am announcing my 2003-04 budget, which addresses the economic challenges that Seattle
faces.
These are tough economic times and we face tough decisions. In this recession, every department
had to cut costs, and we had to get city finances under control.
None of this has been pleasant for you as City employees. But in the end, City government will be
stronger and we will continue in my goal as mayor: To make a difference in people's lives. You are
essential in that mission.
We've worked hard to minimize the disruptions to your careers as dedicated City workers. We also
worked hard to make sure we kept focused on four priorities: public safety, transportation,
economic development and building communities. This budget does not let hard times dismantle our
safety net; it continues significant investment in core human services.
I want to say again how thankful I am for the hard work and dedication of our city employees.

Sincerely,
GREG NICKELS
Mayor
