Mayor Greg Nickels and City Councilmember Jean Godden honored the late Neal Duncan, a Seattle Animal Shelter officer who died on the job in 2006, and unveiled improvements made to the shelter to benefit employees, customers and the animals. First lady Sharon Nickels and "first dog" Edgar, a shelter dog adopted by the Nickels family last year, participated in the ceremonies.

Mayor Greg Nickels helps put the finishing touches on the first phase of work to make Third Avenue safer and more inviting for residents, bus riders, shoppers and workers. The improvements to the sidewalks and street are part of a city effort to address public safety concerns in the area following a series of high-profile incidents over the summer. Councilmembers and the Police Chief will join the mayor to help install planters and tour other physical improvements in the area.

Mayor Greg Nickels holds a press conference to introduce a Seattle Climate Action Now effort that will provide 40,000 energy-efficient light bulbs for low-income residents of the Seattle Housing Authority. The bulbs - part of Seattle City Light’s Twist and Save program - will cut 2.8 million pounds of carbon emissions and save residents $740,000 in energy costs.

Mayor Greg Nickels kicks off the Mayors Climate Summit by raising a giant “Seattle Climate Action Now” flag atop the Space Needle Wednesday morning. The flag is 25’ x35’ and is readable from the air. The Seattle summit on Nov. 1-2 will be the largest-ever meeting of American mayors devoted solely to climate protection. More than 100 mayors from across the country will gather here for the two-day event to discuss the impact of climate change on their communities and the steps cities are taking to reduce greenhouse gas pollution.

Sound Transit: Link Light Rail Base Opening Ceremony 3/6/2007
Sound Transit invited the public to tour the completed Link light rail Operations and Maintenance Facility. The event also featured the unveiling of one of the facility's new public art installations - the old Rainier Brewery ‘R’ which has been incorporated into the building's exterior signage. The STart program's reuse of this Seattle icon connects this facility of the future with the history of the SODO neighborhood and the O&M base's neighbor just across the street where the brewery is being converted into a new mixed-use development. Light rail service is on schedule to start service in 2009 between downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac International Airport.

Mayor Greg Nickels delivers the Seattle Fire Department’s new 50-foot fire rescue boat “Engine 1” to its home on the Elliott Bay waterfront. The state-of-the-art fireboat will allow firefighters to maneuver more quickly in confined spaces such as piers and marinas. The boat can pump 6,000 gallons of water a minute and travel at 30.5 knots an hour. The new fire rescue boat is the first of its kind outside of the military that provides protection to the fireboat crew in the event of a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) attack.
