Car Free Days come to Seattle
Three streets are being opened up on three Sundays to pedestrians and cyclists as part of Mayor Greg Nickels’ campaign to combat global warming by encouraging residents to drive their cars 1,000 miles less a year. Car free days embrace the idea of linking recreational activities in parks to neighborhood business centers without needing an automobile. Additionally, streets within Volunteer and Seward parks are going car free and Lake Washington Boulevard Bicycle Saturday and Sundays is being expanded. Car Free Days are gaining popularity all over the world including Bogota, Colombia’s Ciclovia and Portland 's recent Sunday Parkways. Seattle is joining the excitement with our own Car Free Days this summer.
So gather your friends and family, get creative and enjoy your street to the fullest. You can walk or skate to the park, play board games or street games or participate in group classes. Check out our Get Involved page for more fun car free street ideas. Enjoy this unique opportunity to meet neighbors, support local businesses and play in the streets. It’s a chance to see how livable the city is when people drive less. These three occasions will set the stage for larger Car Free Days in 2009. Check back after September 7 and take a survey on the success of the events and help us make next years even better. If Seattleites drove every vehicle 1,000 miles less a year, we would meet our current climate pollution reduction goals. See Seattle’s Climate Action Now Initiative for more information.
